Boat trailer tongue weight: the stability factor most buyers skip

If a trailer feels light on the hitch, wanders, or gets nervous at highway speed, tongue weight is often part of the story. Personal buyers usually obsess over price and length. Stability lives in how the loaded trailer balances on the coupler.

What tongue weight means

Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer applies on the tow vehicle hitch. Too little and the trailer may sway. Too much and the tow vehicle rear may squat, headlights aim wrong, and steering can feel heavy.

Practical checks before you buy

• Estimate ready-to-tow weight, not dry brochure weight only.
• Ask how the boat will sit on bunks or rollers relative to the axle(s).
• Plan gear placement — coolers and batteries shift balance more than people expect.
• If the hull is unusual, stock geometry may never balance well — consider custom.
