Clear answer: Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer coupler puts on the hitch ball — not trailer GVWR, not boat dry weight, and not “how heavy the whole rig feels when you lift the tongue by hand on a bad day.” Too little tongue weight and the trailer can sway or wander; too much and the truck’s rear squats, the front unloads, and headlights aim high. Personal owners can roughly estimate it with a driveway scale method or use a CAT scale / shop scale when available. Aim for a sensible share of the loaded trailer weight as a rule of thumb (often discussed around roughly 10–15% of trailer + load), then let the trailer, hitch, and tow-vehicle manuals win over any blog percentage. Definition: what tongue weight is (and is not)
When the coupler sits on the ball, part of the trailer’s weight presses down through that joint. That downward force is tongue weight. It is measured at the coupler, with the trailer loaded the way you will tow — boat on the bunks or rollers, fuel and gear where they will ride.
It is not:
- The number on the GVWR plate (that is total trailer + load capacity thinking)
- The boat’s dry weight from a brochure
- The weight of the trailer empty by itself (unless you are measuring empty on purpose)

A fine GVWR sticker still allows bad tongue weight if the boat or gear sits wrong.
A thinking-aid percentage — not a statute
Many towing educators and manuals discuss tongue weight as a fraction of the loaded trailer weight. A common starting rule of thumb for conventional bumper-pull trailers is on the order of about 10–15% of the weight of trailer plus load. Example for intuition only: if trailer + boat + gear is about 2,000 lb, a rough tongue-weight conversation might center near 200–300 lb — if your hitch, receiver, ball, and vehicle ratings allow it.

- Trailer manufacturer guidance
- Hitch and ball ratings
- Tow vehicle owner’s manual (tongue / hitch weight limits)
If any manual’s limit is lower than your “percentage guess,” the manual wins.
Too little tongue weight
When the coupler is too light on the ball, the trailer’s mass is biased rearward. On Texas highways — heat, expansion joints, truck wash — that can show up as:
- Sway or a growing side-to-side oscillation as speed rises
- Wandering that makes you steer more than the lane requires
- A “light hitch” feel at the receiver
- Worse behavior after you piled coolers, a spare, or batteries far aft

Too much tongue weight
When the coupler presses too hard on the ball:
- The rear of the tow vehicle squats
- The front axle unloads — steering can feel light or vague
- Headlights aim high and bother oncoming traffic
- Receiver, ball mount, and chassis points see more continuous stress
- Braking balance of the truck can feel different than you expect

How load placement changes tongue weight
Same boat, same trailer, different weekend packing:
- Batteries and coolers moved toward the stern lighten the tongue; moved forward, they add tongue weight.
- Fuel in a stern tank changes as you burn it — a full tank Friday is not the same as empty Sunday.

- Motor tilt / engine weight is a large mass far aft on many outboards — it is often the main reason light boats still need careful bunk placement.

1. Bathroom-scale-under-a-board (rough driveway method)
With the trailer loaded as you tow, and the coupler at normal towing height (use the jack to set height carefully), owners sometimes rest the coupler on a sturdy board that bridges to a bathroom scale (or use a commercial tongue-weight scale). The goal is to read downward force at coupler height similar to the ball height. Driveway methods are approximate: board flex, scale limits (many bathroom scales max out too low for heavy tongues), and uneven ground all skew numbers. Use them as a ballpark, not a lab certificate.
Safety: chock wheels, keep feet clear, do not crawl under unstable loads, and do not exceed the scale’s rating. If the tongue is clearly hundreds of pounds, a cheap bathroom scale may simply max out — that is a signal to use a better tool, not to bounce on the board.
2. CAT scale / public scale / trailer shop
A more reliable approach is a certified scale: weigh the tow vehicle alone, then vehicle + trailer as needed to isolate tongue contribution using a scale’s multi-platform method, or ask a trailer shop to measure. If you have access to a CAT scale, follow their lane instructions and take a photo of the ticket. Still treat one ticket as “today’s packing,” not forever.
3. Feel is not enough — but feel is a clue
If the truck rear looks planted into the wheel wells and the front looks tall, suspect high tongue weight or wrong hitch height. If the trailer hunts at 60 mph with a light receiver, suspect low tongue weight or aft-heavy packing. Then measure; do not only guess.
How this ties to hitch height and ready-to-tow weight
Tongue weight assumes the coupler is on the ball at a sensible height. A trailer that is steeply nose-up or nose-down changes how weight sits on tires and how the hitch feels, even when “percentage” math looked fine on paper. Level the combination on flat ground first (hitch height guide), then judge tongue weight.
Ready-to-tow weight answers “can the trailer and tires carry this boat?” Tongue weight answers “does the hitch joint get a fair share so the combo tracks?” You need both. Overload a trailer and no tongue-weight tweak saves the bearings on a hot I-10 run. Perfect tongue weight on an overloaded trailer is still a bad plan.
Compact 14ft-class packages still care about tongue weight
Light personal trailers — including many compact unbraked 14ft-class setups — are not exempt from sway physics. Absence of a brake package does not cancel tongue weight. If anything, a light unbraked trailer still depends on hitch manners and truck brakes alone, so stable tracking matters. Do not assume every trailer you see from any seller (including conversations about WSAR Outdoor paths) is braked; package equipment varies. Judge the trailer in front of you: plate, tires, brakes or no brakes, then hitch setup.
A simple owner checklist before a Texas highway day
- Boat fully on bunks/rollers as you will tow; gear placed for the real trip.
- Hitch height adjusted so the frame looks near level on flat ground.
- Coupler latched/pinned; chains crossed; lights checked (pre-trip guide).
- Rough tongue-weight estimate if you changed packing or boats.
- First miles, then a stop, on a new combination (first highway trip).
